Little Stars Early Intervention Centre Presents:

CHALLENGING CHILDREN CONFERENCE
JOHANNESBURG 2009

Their Future Starts Today!

CPD ACCREDITED COURSE

DATE: Sunday, 19 July and Monday, 20 July 2009
VENUE: Education Campus of the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits),
27 St. Andrews Road, Parktown, Johannesburg

The Challenging Children Conference is to be presented by two world renowned professionals – Dr Doreen Granpeesheh, Founder and Executive Director of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD) and President of the Board of Autism Care and Treatment Today (ACT Today) and Dr Jeff Bradstreet Founder and Director of Clinical Programs, The International Child Development Resource Center (ICDRC) and President and Physician at Creation’s Own, Inc.

The focus of the conference will be on:

Biomedical treatments and educational interventions for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder including PDD, ADHD and related disorders.

The notion that autism and related disorders is a lifelong disability is no longer valid. In fact, these disorders are both treatable and often curable. The speakers will present case histories representing these facts.

Never before have speakers of this calibre been available to share their knowledge with a South African audience. Both speakers are at the forefront of the latest research and developments in the field and both doctors are highly regarded in USA. Dr Granpeesheh has appeared on the Dr Phil show and numerous other TV programmes. Dr Bradstreet has commented in Time Magazine and has been interviewed by Jonathan Mann from CNN. If you are a parent, or if you have a patient or learner with Autism, PDD, ADHD or a related disorder this conference will provide you with the opportunity to access the latest research and developments in the field.

Professionals will be accredited with CPD points for attending this course.

Don’t miss this opportunity!

Who should attend?

Speakers will address both parents and professionals, at a level appropriate to them.

PRESENTATION OVERVIEW AND BIOS OF SPEAKERS

DR DOREEN GRANPEESHEH

The child as a whole: Why behavioural and biomedical interventions are both critical to growth and recovery.

Treatment approaches grounded in Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) are now considered to be at the forefront of educational interventions for children with Autism, PDD, ADHD and related disorders. However, research supports a biomedical etiology for autism and related disorders and while studies are conducted to identify exact biomedical pathways, many case studies point to successful outcome with biomedical treatments. While ABA and biomedical practitioners have individually helped provide successful treatment models for autism and related disorders, in developing a “Best Practices” Model, these interventions must work together to provide the best possibilities for successful outcome. Case studies will be presented in support of the behavioural-biomedical treatment model and recent research will be presented to show successful outcomes with these protocols.

DR JEFF BRADSTREET, MD FAAFP

A step by step treatment guide for doctors and parA step by step treatment guide for doctors and parents:

Today autism spectrum disorders affect approximately one in every 166 children in the United States; they are more common than Down’s Syndrome, spina bifida, childhood cancer and cystic fibrosis combined. As a result, clinicians are increasingly faced with providing care to children with this complex of disorders. The biomedical approach is a science-based, molecular-biological approach to treatment. Everyone agrees that psychotropic drugs do not treat the problem — they simply reduce or eliminate some of the symptoms. Our aim, in contrast, is to address the underlying health problems. The guiding principle is simple: remove what is causing harm, and add what is missing. Affected children often have an exaggerated response to toxins, foods and airborne allergens. It is well documented that they often lack various nutrients, enzymes, anti-oxidants, and essential fatty acids, and that they require methylation support. The paradigm shift from autism, including PDD and ADHD, as a static encephalopathy to a new paradigm, one conceptualizing it as systems disorders affecting multiple organs with effects on the brain is being embraced by clinicians who consider medical problems to be integral. Such a shift in clinical direction, toward detection of medical conditions that are amenable to treatments, often leads to improvement in clinical symptoms. One clinical approach is to consider certain vicious cycles that are common in these children. These cycles can include intestinal pathology and gastrointestinal symptoms, allergies and auto-immunity, metabolic abnormalities and oxidative stress that result in impaired detoxification.
